Family Background

My name is CHENG JU-YUN, born in Kaohsiung. There are four people in my family, including my parents, my elder sister and me. My father, a worker, is responsible and honest. He always tells me that I should admit the mistakes I made. My mother, a career woman, is gentle and good at cooking. My mother always teaches me to look on the bright side when I get in trouble. Therefore, I never give up easily whenever I have trouble. My parents both worked when my sister and I were young, so we had to wake up, buy breakfast and cook dinner by ourselves. Thus, I am independent and I always do things by my own. My elder sister is a college student. She always helps people in need and donates clothes and shoes to whoever needs. She teaches me that to construct is more blissfully than to receive. My family is harmonious and I love my family very much. I am glad to have such a wonderful family.

School life

I study at Department of Applied Foreign Languages in National Tainan Commercial Vocational Senior High School.  I think the past three years was a profuse and interesting period.  It’s because there were many activities such as volleyball game, basketball game, English songs contest and so on.  I enjoyed them very much.  When I took part in these activities, I always tried my best to do them.  Among these contests, I like volleyball game in particular because before the game started, I could practice playing volleyball with my classmates every day after school.  Although we were tired after practicing, we all enjoyed doing it.  Due to our efforts, we finally won the third place.  Through this experience, I learned teamwork and sportsmanship.    

  During the senior high school life, I served as a class leader for one year.  As a class leader, I had to handle all the affairs happened in my class.  Even it was just a small thing, I had to inform my homeroom teacher.  Though someone may think that being a class leader is tiring, but I don’t think so.  I like to serve everyone because I love to see everybody’s smile when I did something for them.  After receiving their gratitude, I would feel satisfied.  It was a tiring job, but it was also a special experience for me.  I realized that it was not easy to be a good leader, who should always have orderly plans and capability of making others willing to obey her instructions.

Being an English major, I study English every day.  I study not only the textbooks but also English magazines.  Even when I was in the free time, I would listen to English radio, watch English movies and watch English news to improve my listening ability.  I believe that the more I read and listen, the more listening ability and the more vocabulary I will have.  By working hard, my listening ability has improved a lot.  I wanted to test my ability, so I took the General English Proficiency Test and passed the elementary level.  After that, I took the intermediate level of GEPT.  Though I passed the listening, reading and writing tests, I didn’t pass the oral test.  I knew my English ability still left something to be desired.  As a result, I practiced with my classmate every day and eventually I passed the test.

Self-Evaluation

As for my hobbits, I like to do sports such as basketball and volleyball in my free time. I always do sports with my classmates on weekends, as a result, our friendship becomes more and more firm. In addition, I also learn a lot from it such as teamwork and sportsmanship. Whenever there is a competition, I always try my best to win the first prize. Before the competition, I always practice again and again to become more skilled in order to win the competition. Although not every time we win the first prize, I never complain about it. I always make self-examination and continue practicing. Therefore, I got perseverance from the experience. From then on, whenever I get poor grades, I never give up. Instead, I study harder than before.
  As a class leader for one year in my senior high school days, I think I have the competence of leadership. I have capability of making others willing to obey my instructions. Moreover, I can make a good decision for my class when there is a problem happens in my class. Although sometimes there are debates, I always listen to my classmates’ voice and express my thoughts clearly. I always have orderly plans. This competence enables me to do things in a regular way. For example, before studying, I always plan a schedule about when and what I should study. And this makes me able to study efficiently without being worried about what I miss to read.

Future Perspective

With the beautiful campus, professional teachers and wonderful facilities, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology is an ideal university I have been longing for. I’ll still choose English as my major in college, for I have developed an interest in English from taking different English-related courses in senior high school. After graduating from college, I may pursue a career like an English teacher or an interpreter. Both of these two jobs require a variety of knowledge and a better command of English. Moreover, I want to speak English fluently and talk to people face to face bravely, so I want to take the courses about training students’ oral speaking skill. I believe the excellent faculty and the perfect facilities in your school will help me polish my English ability a lot, so I aspire to be admitted to your school. In the future, I’ll try my best to achieve my goal step by step.

Conclusion

As mentioned above, I think I have prepared well in my high school.  I know learning English is not easy and English can not be learned well within a short time. However, I believe that if I do my best, my effort will pay off at last.

My name is Yang. I am 17 years old. My English name is Wendy. There are seven people in my family, and I am the second child among five. My father is the undertaker of a factory and my mother is a housewife. My sister is a university student, while my younger sisters and brothers are junior high school students. Luckily, I have a happy family with open-minded parents and have a life with affluent materials.

Since I was a kindergarten student, I enjoyed singing and dancing very much. Usually, I volunteered to perform in front of the class. I remember then, I liked to watch variety shows, and that’s how I learned to sing popular songs. Those singers and actors who perform in TV programs are my idols. Every time we hold the birthday celebration for my grandparents, it is me who have to imitate the singers in front of the relatives to amuse them. I felt entertaining people is such a great enjoyment.

Throughout my school time, I have been a regular student in study, but have excellent performance on various activities. Speech, painting, singing contests are my battlefield and the place for me to win my honor. Besides, I have wide range of hobbies. I enjoy reading novels, seeing movies, swimming, mountain hiking, roller-staking and overseas traveling. Also I join the badminton and drama clubs. I spend most of my time in the drama club after school, for every one of our club members has to undertake the role of both the performer and the staff. There are so many works to be done before a play is ready and all of our club members have to contribute ourselves what we are good at. While working with those vigorous and creative fellows I never feel tired or bored.

This summer, my drama club produces a play called ”Aladdin” as our graduation ceremony show. I played Aladdin’s mother, a comic role in the play with greedy and sarcastic characteristics. Because it was a musical, all the actors had to sing and dance at the same time. And thanks to the professional teachers who volunteered to instruct us, we even did the chorus during the play, which was a quartet with fantastic dancing. During the holidays we came to school doing rehearsals and made the costume and by this creative stage world that I stared to think very seriously that whether it was a dream for me to pursuit. My parents tell me to do what I want but not what I am expected to and this is why I decided to apply myself to the drama department.
I want to become a stage actress as other companies who have the same ideal.

To me, a play not only can offer people entertainment, but also in many times, it can provide people a different point of view toward lives. Compare to those with full trained skill, who come from a professional school, maybe I am far too idealistic and naive. I know nothing is easy and I think to be a drama department student would be a big challenge. I am Lin. Sophia is my English name. I am 18 years old, studying in a public girls’ high school. I come from a very happy middle class family. My father works in a bank and my mother works in a bookstore. I am not the so-called spoiled child. My parents make very sure of that by training me to be independent.

Throughout my academic career I have not only gotten good grades but also been very active on sport field and have involved in various societies. I play volleyball and enjoy the team spirit we have. I have joined the drama club and participated in many English speech contests. I really enjoy participating in school activities. I not only made many friends, but also gained many different valuable experiences.

I have been the class English tutor for almost three years. I like to discuss and share the experience of learning English with people a lot. We often read “China Post” and ”Time Magazine” and discuss the content, the word usage and practice speaking English by discussing the articles we have read. At the beginning we found it was quiet hard because we could rarely understand the content but we encouraged each other not to give up. Gradually we had made improvement, we were so excited by it that the group discussion of English books and magazines became one of the most enjoyable things for us every week. I have won the first prize of school English speech contest in second year of high school and many of my English speech contests in my second year of high school and many of my English articles were put on “Students Post.”

My fondness for English is developed from my childhood. It’s lonely to be the only child. I had no one to play with when I was a kid. My mom knew this so she took me with her all the time. Hence bookstores became my playground and books have been my playmates since I was young. My mom would show me those fancy books with cute illustrations on it. Firstly I was drawn by the pictures and then I was curious about these strange symbols called words. That was my first contact with English. As I was interested what those symbol meant, my parents taught me a bit. As they felt that I was eager to learn, they found me an English tutor. Thanks to my parents got the advantage of learning English by starting it at really early age.

My interest in English brought me to the world of English literature. I have been enchanted by this creative world since then, so I decide to major in English literature. My aim is to explore the world of literature and the world of great writers, to open my eyes and cultivate my mind through this great world of literature.

Besides English literature, I also have a wide range of hobbies. I love reading, Writing, music and movies. I have my active side as well, I enjoy swimming, hiking, raveling and going to the nature a lot. I believe we must have balance in our lives, As to my personality. I am creative, optimistic, determined, willing to help others and down to earth.
I want to be one of the literature students who have the privilege of studying great writers’ work and exploring their inner world, their outlook of life and their role as learned scholars and their influence on the world. One morning, I woke up as usual and went down the stairs dreamily. To my shock, I saw a stranger who was sunk in sleep lie on the sofa as if nothing had happened. Then I found that all the things were turned over and spread at sixes and sevens. Moreover, the thief ate all the food in the refrigerator. He also drank several beers and got drunk. After I saw that, I began to shout loudly in order to get rid of my fear. Before long, the thief woke up and took out a gun then he shouted at me,” Be quiet, or I will shot you.” Then I secretly put my hand into my pocket and found that I had a cell phone. Alarmingly, I called the police. Soon, the police arrived and burst open the door. The thief was so astonished that he couldn’t move. Then the police handcuffed the thief and sent him to the police station. Thanks to the police arrived in time; I could depart from the danger. I think that this was the most frightening experience I have ever had.

I'm not on the same page as those who oppose using the death penalty as a form of criminal punishment.  Although many people insist that using the death penalty be cruel, I strongly believe that the punishment can decrease the crime rate because by doing that, those who are going to commit crimes will stop to think before they do illegal things.  In addition, no one can argue against the fact that if we punish the criminals by using the death penalty, the victims won't worry that the criminals will hurt them again.  Moreover, too many criminals will commit the same crimes because they think that what they did will not threaten their lives.  Consequently, it's for all the above-mentioned reasons that I believe we should use the death penalty as a form of criminal punishment.

I am hiring a new English instructor for my school and I receive two resumes from people applying for the job.  They are Lynn Whitnall and Debra Fines.  After reading their resumes, I choose Lynn Whitnall to be my school's English instrutor for some reasons.  First of all, Lynn has experience in the position of English instructor from 1997 to 2000 while Debra doesn't.  Furthermore, Lynn has awarded a prize which praise him for his excellence in teaching in 2004.  However, Debra doesn't have any awards.  Next, Lynn is fluent in Spanish, French, and Japanese.  On the other hand, Debra is just fluent in French.  Moreover, Lynn has more teaching experience than Debra does.  Lynn has taught since 1997.  In contrast, though Debra has experience in teaching, he is just a swimming teacher.   As a result, I prefer to choose Lynn to be my school's new English instructor.

Over the past 150 years there has been a huge increase in population and there are some reasons why this situation happens.  First of all, people have advances in medicine and health care; hence, more and more people can be saved from dying and they can receive better care than ever.  Another reason is that people have better sanitation so that there are less infections spreading.  Furthermore, people improved farming methods that produce more and better food; consequently, people could have healthier bodies.  Finally, there are fewer infant deaths and more people living longer; as a result, there are more and more people living in the world.  It’s for all the above-mentioned reasons that find why population increases.

I’m a business administration student and I have been asked to analyze a case.  I find some reasons why the business failed.  One reason is that the location isn’t good because the store is located next to the lobby on the ground floor of the Fairfax Apartment Building which is on a small side street just outside of town.  By the side of the store are two large music stores, so most people would go to the two large music stores instead of going to this small shop.  Another reason is that most of the CDs are classified as hip-hop and rock, but most of the dwellers are old and may like soft music instead of those sold in the store.  These CDs don’t meet their needs.  Furthermore, the shop is open Monday to Friday from 1 to 5 P.M. but at the time, there are less people than other period.  Most importantly, the ways we can pay for the CDs are too few.  The shop wouldn’t accept checks or credit cards.  It’s for all the above-mentioned reasons that I consider why the business failed.

Students should wear uniforms to school.  Although many people insist that wearing uniforms to school should not be convenient, I strongly believe that if we don't have uniforms, we have to be worried about what we should wear every day, and then we will not study hard because of spending too much time choosing clothes.  While it's true that we don't have freedom of clothes, I believe uniforms will make us look more disciplinal.  Furthermore, more and more larcenies happened in school, what we can do is properly manage the people who enter school.  If we wear uniforms, we can differentiate between students and strangers.  Then, strangers can't enter school easily, and the larcenies will decrease.  In light of all the points mentioned, it's obvious that students should wear uniforms to school.

Over the past 150 years there has been a huge increase in population and there are some reasons why this situation happens.  First of all, we have advances in medicine and health care; hence, more and more people can be saved from dying and they can receive better care than ever.  Another reason we have better sanitation so that there are less infections spreading.  Furthermore, people improved farming methods that produce more and better food; consequently, people could have healthier bodies.  Finally, there are fewer infant deaths and more people living longer; as a result, there are more and more people living in the world.  It’s for all the above-mentioned reasons that find why population increases.

I’m a business administration student and I have been asked to analyze a case.  I find some reasons why the business failed.  One reason the location isn’t good because the store is located next to the lobby on the ground floor of the Fairfax Apartment Building which is on a small side street just outside of town.  By the side of the store are two large music stores, so most people would go to the two large music stores instead of going to this small shop.  Another reason is that most of the CDs are hip-hop and rock, but most of the dwellers are old.  These CDs don’t meet their needs.  Furthermore, the shop is open Monday to Friday from 1 to 5 P.M. but at the time, there are less people than other period.  Most importantly, the ways we can pay for the CDs are too few.  The shop wouldn’t accept checks or credit cards.  It’s for all the above-mentioned reasons that I consider why the business failed.

Students should wear uniforms to school.  Although many people insist that wear uniforms to school is't convenient, I strongly believe that if we don't have uniforms, we have to be worried about what we should wear every day, and then we will not study hard because we will spend time choosing clothes.  While it's true that we don't have freedom of clothes, I believe uniforms will make us look more disciplinal.  More and more larcenies happened in school, what we can do is properly manage the people who enter school.  If we wear uniforms, we can differentiate between students and strangers.  Then, strangers can't enter school easily, and the larcenies will decrease.  In light of all the points mentioned, it's obvious that students should wear uniforms to school.

I'm not on the same page as those who oppose using the death penalty as a form of criminal punishment.  Although many people insist that using the death penalty is cruel, I strongly believe that the punishment can decrease the crime rate because by doing that, those who are going to commit crimes will stop to think before they do illegal things.  In addition, no one can argue against the fact that if we punish the criminals by using the death penalty, the victims won't worry that the criminals will hurt them again.  Moreover, too many criminals will commit the same crimes because thay think that what they did will not threaten their lives.  Consequently, it's for all the above-mentioned reasons that I believe we should use the death penalty as a form of criminal punishment.

Alarmingly, I called the police. Soon, the police arrived and burst in. The thief was so astonished that he couldn’t move. Then the police handcuffed the thief and sent him to the police station. Thanks to the police, I could depart from the danger. I think this is the most frightening experience that I have ever had.
